Over 1,000 fans attended the annual Louisville Slugger Invitational on Sunday March 10, 2019, to support their school’s softball team. Long Beach State competed against Robert Morris, Boston University, San Diego State, Ohio, Liberty and UCLA in the tournament.

Long Beach State senior left fielder, Jamie Wren hit a three-run homerun in the first inning against No. 2 UCLA, creating a storm of cheers from the Long Beach State crowd. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Kellie White was able to temporarily shut down UCLA, not allowing them to score any runs in the first inning.

Additionally, Wren gave Long Beach State the lead by hitting a home run against UCLA’s starting pitcher Holly Azevedo.

However in the second inning, the Bruin’s right fielder, Tayler Pack, hit a home run against White, cutting the Beach lead to 3-1.

At the top of third inning though, UCLA tied the game, 3-3, thanks to a two-run RBI by the Bruin’s designated hitter, Aaliyah Jordan. Jordan’s hit brought home Bubba Nicklers and Kelli Godin. Nevertheless, the Beach crowd continued to cheer on the team whenever they were next to bat.

That said, after four scoreless innings, the game moved on to extra innings where the Bruins took control. UCLA scored two runs from pinch hitter Malia Quarles, who doubled down the left field line to give the Bruins a 5-3 lead.

Long Beach State ended the Louisville Slugger Invitational tournament 1-4, with losses to Robert Morris, 11-6, San Diego State, 4-1, Ohio State, 5-1, and UCLA, 5-3. The Beach’s sole win came against Liberty, who they beat 7-0.

The Beach will be playing at the Easton Invitational Tournament hosted by Cal State Fullerton on March 15, 2019.
