Despite three consecutive inning leads, the 49ers were only able to win one game against the Titans in their three game series at Long Beach last Saturday.
As the first game began, the 49ers led the first inning 1-0. The 49ers starting pitcher Kellie White did remarkable in shutting out the Titans at bat. Keeping their lead, the 49ers’ defense prohibited the Titans from scoring in the fifth inning.
Two runners were ready to score when Titans right fielder Kelsie Whitmore was up to bat. Whitmore hit a double to outfield but the runners were unable to score when 49ers catcher Justine Briones tagged one of the runners at home.
The Titans turned the tables around though, scoring five runs and taking the win in the first game of the series.
After a double header and a 30-minute break, 49er Nichole Fry hit a solo home run that ended up being the only run in the second game.
“I believe in every single one of my teammates and our pitchers, and on defense, we just know we have to have their backs and make big defensive plays,” said Fry.
In game three, the 49ers kept the 3-0 lead against the Titans.
After a successful three innings, the 49ers pitcher Ashley Coleman gave up a run in the fourth inning after a lead-off walk.
In the fifth inning, the Titans’ third baseman Deshea Hill tied the game with a two-run home run, 3-3. But the Titans didn’t stop there, adding three more runs before ending the inning.
White opened the sixth inning but had a difficult time hitting the first two batters up and allowed a walk to load up the bases. The Titans took advantage of this and added three more runs to keep the lead.
The 49ers added three runs but were shut out on the seventh inning by Titans pitcher Taylor Dockins, allowing the Titans a second win in the series.
The 49ers next game will be against UCSB with a doubleheader at the LB softball complex Friday, April 19. First game will start at 1 p.m.
